Safely Editing the Registry...
Windows XP has a vast number of configuration dialogs, but some adjustments can be performed only by directly editing the Registry. Frequently, tips involving Registry tweaks include stern warnings to back up the Registry before making any change. The Windows XP Backup applet can back up the Registry along with other elements of the System State, but the resulting data file can occupy hundreds of megabytes. You're better off saving a system restore point each time you're about to edit the Registry. Better still, you can use Regedit to back up only the Registry keys that will be changed.
Click on Start | Run and enter Regedit to launch the Registry editor. To back up an individual key you plan to edit, navigate to the key and right-click on it. Choose Export from the menu, and save the key to a REG file. Open the REG file in Notepad and insert a few comment lines that describe the source and purpose of the tweak. (To create a comment line, simply put a semicolon at th e start of the line.)
Now go ahead and make all the changes to Registry keys and values specified by the tip you're applying. Any time you add a new key or value, make a note of it with another comment line in the REG file. When you're done, save the REG file and close Notepad.
If later you want to undo this Registry tweak, just double-click on the REG file and confirm that you want to add it to the Registry. This will restore any deleted keys or values and will restore the original data for any values whose data was changed. Note that this will not remove new keys or values that were added; that's why you need to make comments about such changes.

Why Doesn't Windows Remember My Folder View Settings?
If you've changed the view settings for a folder, but Windows "forgets" the settings when you open the folder again, or if Windows doesn't seem to remember the size or position of your folder window when you reopen it, this could be caused by the default limitation on storing view settings data in the registry; by default Windows only remembers settings for a total of 200 local folders and 200 network folders.
To work around this problem, create a BagMRU Size DWORD value in both of the following registry keys, and then set the value data for both values to the number of folders that you want Windows to remember the settings for. For example, for Windows to remember the settings for 5000 local folders and 5000 network folders, set both values to 5000.
Here is how:

How to find a remote IP
Method 1
To view someone's IP# when they send you hotmail email do this:
1) Click "Options" on the upper right side of the page.
2) On the left side of the page, Click "Mail"
3) Click "Mail Display Settings"
4) Under "Message Headers" select "Full" or "Advanced"
5) Click ok
Method 2
reg a dydns account and install the ip pointer, so each time you ping the host name you regestored
for example:
you regestor the host name myhost.dydns.com, then you keep a little software running on the target host. The little software will keep update your IP to dydns.com server.
so at your pc just start cmd, and ping myhost.dydns.com, it will give you the most updated ip address.

Then give them a link to your IP address (for example: 111.111.111.11) and tell them to type it in their browser . The browser should resolve the address as well as append port 80 automatically. Just download a very simple server such as this one and install it on your comp. Then run it and give your ip to the person you want and tell them to connect to it through a browser. Your server will log their connection and you will get their IP.

Creating Universal Ghost Usb Boot Disk And Cd
If you want to use Norton Ghost 2003 to create an image of a PC's primary partition you will find it has 2 serious limitations: 1- The USB support driver they use (from Iomega) can only be installed in USB1 or USB2 mode (not both), and it is not universal - it didn't recognize my external USB IBM mobile HD . 2- You can't create a Ghost bootable CD - only a floppy. How can you clone a newly bought laptop, most of which don't have a floppy anymore? Here's How to: 1- create a Ghost floppy with USB support (1 or 2 - it won't matter later) 2- download 2 files kxlrw40an.exe and mhairu.zip CODE http://panasonic.co.jp/pcc/products/drive/cdrrw/kxlrw40an/driver/kxlrw40an.exe CODE http://www.stefan2000.com/darkehorse/PC/DOS/Drivers/USB/mhairu.zip From the first file (Panasonic driver for a USB CDRW) you will need the file usbaspi.sys found under "F2H" sub directory after extraction of the downloaded archive. From the second archive you need di1000dd.sys 3- Copy these 2 files to the USB folder on the Ghost floppy, and delete any other files in that folder. Also delete the file guest.exe from the floppy's root. 4- And finaly: edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file - delete the line: guest.exe and edit CONFIG.SYS - delete all entries and enter: device=usb\USBASPI.SYS /v /e /o /u device=usb\Di1000dd.SYS LASTDRIVE = Z That's it. You can now boot with this floppy and have full USB support so you can create the image on an external USB drive. Create the following DWORD values, as most of these values will not already exist you will need to create them by clicking on 'Edit -> New -> DWORD Value' and then set the value as shown below. DefaultTTL = "80" hex (or 128 decimal) Specifies the default time to live (TTL) for TCP/IP packets. The default is 32. EnablePMTUBHDetect = "0" Specifies whether the stack will attempt to detect Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) routers that do not send back ICMP fragmentation-needed messages. The default is 0. EnablePMTUDiscovery = "1" Specifies whether the TCP/IP stack will attempt to perform path MTU discovery as specified in RFC 1191. The default is 1. GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = "7FFF" hex (or 32767 decimal) Specifies the system maximum receive window size advertised by the TCP/IP stack. TcpMaxDupAcks = "2" Determines the number of duplicate ACKs that must be received for the same sequence number of sent data before "fast retransmit" is triggered. SackOpts = "1" Enables support for selective acknowledgements as documented by Request for Comment (RFC) 2018. Default is 0. Tcp1323Opts = "1" Controls RFC 1323 time stamps and window scaling options. Possible values are: "0" = disable RFC 1323 options, "1" = window scale enabled only, "2" = time stamps enabled only and "3" = both options enabled. TcpWindowSize = "7FFF" hex (or 32767 decimal) Specifies the receive window size advertised by the TCP/IP stack. If you have a latent network you can try increasing the value to 93440, 186880, or 372300. Exit your registry and restart Windows for the changes to take effect. Scheduled Tasks - Defrag, how to set up scheduled defrags
oi m8s i figured this out because i ran into problems with trying to get windows task manager to defrag my hardrive at a certain time by only using built in tools. Step 1 open up notepad (or favorite editor) and type: defrag c: defrag d: defrag e: defrag f: defrag g: defrag j: make sure to change the drive letters to one that match your system. After you have customized the drive letters save the file as defrag_script.BAT or whatever is easy for you to remeber. Just make sure its a ".BAT" file. I saved the file into a dir in my documents called scripts but you can put it anywhere. Step 2 Now that you have the script already made open your control panel and click on "Scheduled Tasks". Select file>new>Scheduled Task it should create a file on oin the window called "New Task" slect this and right click to properties. In the run box click browse and navigate to your script. make sure that you run it with an account that has administrator rights otherwise it might not work. Now select the schedule tab from the top and input the time and how often. I chose to urn it every noght however you could probably run it once a week and still be fine. After yo uset the time and how often have a look in the settings tab and see if you need to change anything. Then click okay and your done! you can also modify the script further by adding various operations on the ends of the defrag command: CODE -a Analyze Only -f Force defragmentation even if free space is low -v verbose output -? Display help text You can also pipe the command defrag to a log file if you want to see what went on the last time the script ran: CODE --this form will rewirte the log file erasing any previous info-- defrag x: -v > x:/logs/defrag_log.txt --this form will append the new info to the end of the old-- defrag x: -v >> x:/logs/defrag_log.txt
